Facilities Expansion

Floral Park-Bellerose School Celebrates New Addition

Members of the Floral Park–Bellerose Union Free School District Board of Education, administrators, teachers, students, family and friends gathered on the chilly evening of Dec. 9 to officially celebrate the completion of the Floral Park-Bellerose School Facilities Expansion Project with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Guests were welcomed to the outside courtyard of the new wing by Board President Laura Trentacoste and Superintendent Dr. Kathy Sottile, who gave thanks, praise and acknowledgements to all who have supported and championed the project since passing the bond referendum in 2018.

During the ceremonial agenda, Principal John DeKams spoke of the value and benefits of the 21st century learning environment for all students. A handful of students were invited to the podium to share their delight with the new enhanced space and classrooms.

Appropriately for the time of year, members of the student chorus entertained with songs “Winter Wonderland” and “Jingle Bell Rock.” Just prior to the outside festivities concluding, the principal, with large golden scissors in hand, asked members of the student council to assist him in cutting the ribbon. Everyone was then invited inside to enjoy refreshments and student led tours to see the new addition to our school firsthand.

New Facilities Commemorated at John Lewis Childs School

The windy chill in the air did not stifle the excitement as Floral Park-Bellerose Union Free School District administrators, board of education, students, staff and community members joined together to celebrate the completion of the John Lewis Childs School Facilities Expansion Project with an outdoor ribbon-cutting ceremony on Dec. 13.

Attendees were invited to gather at the school’s new wing entrance on Flower Avenue. Superintendent Dr. Kathy Sottile acknowledged and thanked all who made the project possible, including the community for helping to pass the bond referendum in 2018.

Principal Susan Fazio then introduced Student Council President Grace Cohn to speak at the podium. Cohn shared how she loves the new wing and completing projects in the Discovery Lab. Cohn and Student Council Vice President Abby Burleigh, joined by Principal Fazio and Assistant Principal Kristina Lynch, cut the ribbon together to a chorus of cheers and clapping.

Guests were then invited inside to enjoy refreshments and Student Council-led tours of the new addition. As they walked the new halls, visitors were also treated to music by orchestra teacher David Elyaho and student-musicians.
